W A P stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It is the globally recognised programming model that enables mobile phones to access the Internet. The advent of WAP means that organizations, many of whom already use Internet based information systems, can give their employees instant access to company data and applications when on the move.
Background to WAP
To access WAP pages you need a mobile phone that is WAP enabled such as the Nokia 7110. You then use the phone as you would a normal Web browser, by typing in the URL address of the page you want to view. The signal to fetch the page is sent to a WAP gateway server run by the mobile operator. The gateway decodes the request and sends it (using the Internet standard HTTP) to the server holding the page requested. This server can be an existing off-the-shelf Web server with slight modifications to host WML files. Wireless

Markup Language is the language used to write WAP documents and is very similar to HTML. The server then sends the document back to the gateway, which encodes the content and sends it across the wireless network to be displayed on the phone. The technology used is based heavily on the well known World Wide Web model of accessing the Internet but is tuned to cope with the constraints imposed by a wireless network.

This can be achieved using a phone instead of a normal browser, by typing in the URL address of the required page. The signal to fetch the page is sent to a WAP gateway server run by the mobile operator. The gateway decodes the request and sends it using standard HTTP, to the server holding the page requested. The server then sends the document back to the gateway, the contents are encoded and sent across the wireless network to be displayed on the phone.

Within the next five years, mobile phone use is expected to grow from the current 300 million subscribers to an estimated 1 billion. E-commerce companies have been quick to adopt WAP technology. Many of the leading Internet companies have already established WAP sites, and these are rapidly becoming an integral part of these organizations’ profile, just as their Web site has been in the past.
