Website Promotion > Link Popularity
By Webzworks IT Solution
Link popularity is one of the most important factors used by search engines when ranking a web page. Discover how to obtain the best links to your site and also which pages are currently linked to yours.
The assumption behind link popularity is clear: if other sites are linking to yours it must be good. And since the search engines want to provide high quality results, websites with more inbound links are assumed to be better and are given a higher ranking.
While linking strategies take advantage of this tendency, the majority of engines include other factors when calculating link popularity.
Google's complex Page Rank (PR) system, for example, also takes the quality of the links into account. It does this by seeing whether the actual web page being linked to and the page it's linked from meet certain criteria.
Based on this reasoning, links on your site that contain your keywords or point to other sites with similar content increase your rankings for those keywords - which explains why some people even go as far as to add links to their own competitors.
What all this means is that links to and from popular and relevant sites are by far the most valuable in determining your link popularity.
Link Popularity Tips
Obtaining Links
It can be time-consuming to request links. Try this simple solution to get some relevant links to your site quickly:
Go to any search engine and enter the following in the search field:
"your keyword" + "add url" or
"your keyword" + "add link" or
"your keyword" + "submit site"
where "your keyword" is a word or phrase relevant to your website, that also appears in your meta tags.
In this way you'll find the most popular and most visited sites for the keyword that allow you to add a link to your site automatically. The sorts of pages that will crop up include guestbooks and forums.
Checking Links to your site
It's quite easy to see which websites link to your site. Just go to one of the search engines www.google.com or www.altavista.com.
Then, to search for pages linking to your site, simply enter your domain name this way:
link:webzworks.com (or whatever your website address is). It's not necessary to include the http:// or www part of your website address.
This will list all the pages that have hyperlinks directed to the webzworks.com website and should include links to all the pages on the site.
You'll probably find that some pages from within the site link to each other too. You can eliminate these and only list the linked external sites by using the "-url" command on Altavista:
link:webzworks.com -url:webzworks.com
