Broadband in GAS (BiG) Dreams or reality?

By ShockExcite Media Sdn Bhd

Hey hey hey! How's everyone? Just 3 days ago, while chatting with one of our close mates in the US, apparently told us about this company based in San Diego has developed or still in the midst of development "Broadband in GAS (BiG). Went through everything, every detail we managed to grab our hands on and just a write up for you to consider whether it would be a benefit or potential threat to the industry.

So anyone who is not satisfied with the speed of the broadband access services offered by your cable and telecom providers (sorry folks, you know it'll be based in US or other countries that has gas supply NOT via gas cilinders DOH!) Another option may soon be available, according to San Diego-based Nethercomm Corp.: broadband in gas (BiG). We have to admit, when we first heard about this, we thought it sounded like a lot of ...BiG dreams (sorry), but according to Nethercomm, BiG can offer 10-gigabit broadband using "the private spectrum isolated within natural gas pipelines." Essentially, what Nethercomm is planning is a broadband system that pumps data from existing local hubs, through gas lines and into homes, where it can be accessed using existing cable modems. While the idea of stringing Ethernet cables from our gas line sounds like something we wouldn't want to attempt on our own, the concept doesn't sound all that far-fetched after all. Of course this means that in addition to the endless marketing mailings and calls we already get from the cable and telecom companies, we'll now have to listen to the gas man's pitch about broadband when he comes to read the meter.

This technology is designed to effectively multiply the current available bandwidth of cable television and all other broadband systems with data capacities exceeding ten gigabits. Broadband-in-Gas delivers unmatched levels of connectivity by making use of Ultra Wideband technology to wirelessly broadcast information in a way that is both safe and reliable by using the private spectrum isolated within natural gas pipelines.

Nethercomm's technology requires no modification to existing natural gas distribution infrastructures and can carry enormous amounts of data by simply making use of the entire spectrum buried within the existing natural gas pipelines. The technology delivers connectivity over the last mile of broadband networks without interference or degradation of other wireless transmissions. By not consuming or sharing costly spectrum, and not requiring installation of last mile cable or fiber, Nethercomm is prepared to make broadband substantially more affordable while increasing end-user bandwidth to unprecedented levels.

According to Nethercomm Corporation, they strongly believe their technology represents a completely new era of low cost broadband access, completely new alternative to cable video, phone and data services, however they have been tight-lipped about the innovation until their Patent Portfolio foundation has completely in plance, quoting Ann Nunally, President and COO of the company.

Nethercomm is currently developing natural gas, broadband and consumer electronics partnerships to validate and certify its revolutionary technology for use in existing natural gas pipelines. Simply stated, Nethercomm introduces signals into the gas lines using inexpensive equipment located at existing neighborhood network hubs and extracts data at the customer or business premises with end user-installed equipment which can operate seamlessly with most existing and deployed digital set-top boxes.

Well ShockExciterz, let's see how far they'll be, it will be unfortunate we won't be enjoying it (ahem!) but it'll be exciting to know how it ends up.

Cheers!
